Bayreuth

Bayreuth is a must-visit for Wagner fans and lovers of the Baroque – home to the legendary festival and magnificent Baroque buildings. The city combines history with a relaxed atmosphere, making it perfect for a day trip from your region to Bayreuth.

Highlights & places to visit

  • Festspielhaus: Wagner’s temple on the Green Hill. Guided tours reveal the mystical stage mechanisms – ideal before the Festival (July/August).
  • Margrave’s Opera House: UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Baroque gem dating from 1748.

Eremitage: Wilhelmine’s idyllic garden with grottos, waterfalls and temples. Perfect for picnics and photo opportunities – deserted in the early morning.

Wilhelmine: The city’s founder

Margravine Wilhelmine (1709–1758), sister of Frederick the Great, named Bayreuth “Bareith” and turned it into a cultural centre. She built palaces, theatres and parks – her legacy shapes the city to this day.

Insider tip: Read her memoirs at the city library (free of charge) for anecdotes about court intrigues and the arts.
